How To Plan a Trip to The Maldives
1. All international flights fly into the capital Male City. Afterwards, you can either take a speed boat to your island or an internal flight by propeller or seaplane. It all depends on where your island is located and how far it is from the capital Male.
2. The internal transfers are extremely expensive, so you need to factor this into the cost of your trip. Also, it is close to impossible to find your own way to your island by booking the internal transfer yourself independently. The best thing to do is to arrange for your Maldives speedboat transfer or seaplane transfer through your hotel. The main types of internal transports are seaplane, speedboat or propeller plane.
3. The Maldives is a Muslim country and alcohol is only served in resorts and hotels. You are not allowed to bring any alcohol with you even if it’s purchased from the duty-free, nor do you have the option of purchasing it from supermarkets.
4. The Maldives has 2 main types of islands: a) local islands and b) islands that have resorts (usually one resort per island). If you stay at a local island in a guesthouse, women are not allowed to wear bikinis except on one designated beach per island. Alcohol is definitely not served anywhere in the local islands.
5. There is a huge 21.5% tax and service fee on everything including hotel rates, food, drink and activities inside the resorts. The fee adds a significant amount to your total budget, so keep this in mind.
6. Once you arrive at your island/hotel, you will stay there for the duration of your trip. Some hotels offer excursions to neighboring islands, but usually, you will be spending 90% of your time on your island. You don’t have the option of going out to restaurants, supermarkets or bars outside of your hotel.
Maldives Travel Tips
1. The best time to go
The Maldives is beautiful year-round, but some months are rainy and when you’re paying a big budget for a dream trip, you want to go during the dry season. Best months: November to April. High season: December to March. More info about Maldives travel weather here.
2. Picking the types of activities you can enjoy
If you’re looking to explore the underwater world and go diving and snorkeling, then each island has different types of wildlife you can enjoy. For example: there are very specific islands to go diving with whale sharks, so don’t expect to go anywhere in the Maldives and be able to see them. Make sure you take this into consideration before choosing your resort.
3. Selecting your Maldives hotels on the water
This is the most important part of your whole trip, because unlike other destinations, you will be spending almost all your time in the hotel. This is why I’ve included the best Maldives overwater villas in my list below suitable for different budgets.
4. Choosing whether or not to book an all-inclusive option
This is a tricky one and it all depends on your meal preferences and budget. The cost of food and drink in the resort is extremely high and if you don’t want to read through the whole menu and prices every time you sit down for a meal, then the all-inclusive option can be easier to factor into your budget. At least you will know how much you’ll be spending from the start.
All-inclusive also means that you will be served A LOT of food that sometimes you can’t even finish. Another option would be to have a big breakfast and dinner and a very light lunch or snack in between, especially if you’re doing water activities. Even with my all-inclusive package, I was sometimes so full from breakfast that I skipped lunch most of the time.
5. Maldives trip cost
Your Maldives vacation cost will mostly depend on the hotel you choose. A typical mid-range vacation to the Maldives will cost around $300 to $500 a night. You can definitely aim for cheaper floating bungalows or choose to stay in a regular hotel room if you want to plan Maldives on a budget.
