The city is home to lots of “firsts,” as Baltimore.org notes, including the first monument dedicated to George Washington and the country’s first cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a neoclassical building constructed between 1806 and 1863 that’s considered the masterpiece of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the “Father of American Architecture.”
As the birthplace of the American Railroad, you can find out more about railroad history at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum which hosts the Western Hemisphere’s most comprehensive collection of its kind.
You can also visit the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine where Fort McHenry defended Baltimore during the 1814 battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner.
Of course, it’s not all about history here. Check out the more than the century-old collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art which exhibits everything from ancient to contemporary works, and browse the nearly 240-year-old Lexington Market which hosts over 100 vendors.
The National Aquarium is one of the state’s most popular visitor attractions, located in the Inner Harbor with a collection that includes over 700 fish species, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. There’s enough here to keep you busy for an entire day or more.
